Are you unaware of these signs of a sluggish metabolism?

Focusing on the number on the scale as opposed to what your body is telling you?
So often I speak to women and the two things that are bothering them the most is their weight, and that they don’t have any energy.
The latter, they just put down to being busy and “isn’t this just getting older”.
They try to eat well, reduce carbs up protein, do Zoe, intermittent fasting, yoa, medication, exercising more.
Nothing they do is working for them, and it’s not fair because it might be working for some of their girlfriends.
They have been to the docs to get everything checked and all tests come back “normal” and very often just told this is the peri/menopause journey.
Can you relate?
The thing is, often the body is trying to tell them something, but they just don’t realise they need to listen to how they feel.
The body provides signs all of the time that something is skewed with the metabolism. These can all make us tired and contribute to weight gain or make it harder to support weight loss.
Rather than focusing on cals in and cals out in its various guises, we must first listen to what the body is telling us so that we can restore the metabolism.
In this video I talk through some of the signs that the body is crying out for some help, to help you support your metabolism, your energy and a healthy weight.
Sleep
Not sleeping enough or broken sleep, getting a second wind at night and can’t get to sleep - not only will we be knackered, the body will be craving more carbs to get you through the day, causing more cravings and more energy crashes that need diverting.
Sugar cravings
Craving sugar and carbs all of the time - no, you aren’t a sugar addict, your body is just crying out for you to not restrict your foods, not skip meals, and to take some time to figure out what the best balance of macros is for you. More than likely, you may not be eating enough protein and not enough fat.
Stress
Craving salt - crisps, salt nuts, cheeses? the body is telling you that the stress response needs some support as the part of the body that produces the hormone cortisol to help us handle stress, also monitors our sodium. So when it is so focused on one area, it forgets to do it’s other job and we crave to replace the salt quickly.
Sluggish liver
Exhausted when you wake up, headaches or migraines, brain fog, maybe feeling a bit nauseous in the morning, can’t tolerate alcohol any more, or PMS out of control - the liver needs some support. It’s not able to keep up with the job at hand at the moment. And the liver is responsible for so many things, one of which is creating your active thyroid hormones. If the liver isn’t working optimally, it will make you tired and make it so much harder to lose weight.
Gut health
Bloating, gut aches and pains, acid reflux, brain fog, more food reactions, belching, excessive wind, not going to the loo number 2s properly every day. These are things that you might just be putting up with, you are not “sick” as the doctors have checked, but they are signs that something is wrong with your digestion. This will make you tired and prevent your weight management efforts from working.
Inflammation
Increased joint aches and pains - if some or all of the above is going on, there's a chance that 1. The body doesn’t have the time or the nutrients to do the essential day-to-day repair, and 2. Doesn’t have what it needs to stay on top of inflammation. Making you more tired, sluggish and puffy with weight loss impossible.
If we are tired all of the time, again, if some or all of the above is going on (or more) and you have been pushing yourself through each day for a long time, it is more than likely that your stress and energy hormones are dysregulated (meaning a little out of whack). Dieting, skipping meals, intense exercise all make this worse and although we always try to use food first, the body could do with some supplement support to recovery.
So is it the number on the scales, or have we been ignoring some telltale signs that the body has been showing us, we just haven’t known to listen to them or what they mean.
